The Sanisera Field School offers an archeology dig on Gibellina, a place located in the central part of the island of Sicily, in a Mediterranean landscape surrounded by traditional farming fields and vineyards with a long archaeological past. This course is for students who come from all over the world to study abroad and who are interested in anthropology.
The 8th and 7th centuries BC was a period of great change in the history of Greece, following the impetus that got the economy developed in their cities. Advances and progress employed in agriculture increased trade and navigation, and ultimately the beginning of a migration of the population that ended up founding new cities by the west of the Mediterranean, coasts of Sicily and Italy.
Soil fertility of Sicily was reason enough for the Greeks to choose it as a destination of its inhabitants, using its agricultural resources. According to classical authors such as Thucydides and Diodorus Siculus, a city was founded around the year 759 BC in Gibellina.
Nearby, it was discovered a Greek necropolis dating from the V century BC. During the summer of 2013 the first four graves in the cemetery have been dug. Two of the tombs were very interesting because the skeletons were accompanied by complete pottery vessels in perfect conditions. The team of anthropologists conducting the investigation of this necropolis intends to excavate for years the site in order to get more information related to the biological anthropology of the Greek population that colonized Sicily during this ancient time.
The fieldwork focuses on funerary structures, specifically inhumation graves. Students will also participate in lectures on skeletal anatomy and pathologies, classes, exercises and excursions related to the course material.
