Continuation of the excavations at the Roman military camp (123 BC / 50 BC)
During the summer of 2004 some spaces were excavated from one of the buildings at the military camp.
The spaces were used in different ways: supplies and water storage, food preparation and the manufacturing of weaponry.
One of the excavated sectors included a double cistern to store collected rain water, coated with opus caementicium .
Some unique finds during the excavation campaign include a large number of lead projectiles that were used by the Balearic mercenaries in their fight against Rome 's enemies. These bullets were found in a corner in one of the building rooms.
In relation with the previous comments and as a noteworthy point in this year's campaign, we can mention the discovery of a bronze pilum , a weapon that stresses the site's typology and its military nature.
We would like to remember here the find of a rider's spur recovered from a ditch (FS33) in 1996, that adds to the archaeological value of finding a pilum .
The pilum clearly indicates the presence in Sanitja of legionaries, maybe of the hastati or principes type, that could belong to a unit of some 120 soldiers. And the find of a spur shows the presence of some cavalry unit.
