European iniciative- Culture programme 2000

The Ecomuseum de Cap de Cavalleria participates in the Programme Culture 2000 of the European Union with the University of Edinburgh (Scotland, United Kingdom) and the association Dünsberg Verein e.V., from Rodheim-Bieber (Hessen, Germany) with the goal to disseminate, research, protect and transmit the European cultural heritage.

The common topic of the project, entitled “ Rome 's conquest of Europe : military aggression, native responses and the European public today”, focuses on the Roman expansion and its relationship with the indigenous peoples. As it is known, tribes and ethnic groups responded to the conquest, and at first Britannic, Talayotic or Celtic peoples temporarily resisted, then assimilated the Roman ways and were finally colonized as Roman citizens, creating the furthest reaching and longest standing political entity in European history.

RomanoThe project deals with three sites that cover the principal period in Roman expansion, from the end of the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD, and spreads from the Mediterranean to Great Britain , stopping at the German Roman border.

The past is reflected in this joint project by studying Sanisera's Roman harbour and its military settlement, the military fort at Alchester ( Oxford , United Kingdom ), and the oppidum, or Celtic village at the Dünsberg. The three participating entities carry out their archaeological activity in these sites.

From this moment onwards, the sites will be linked through their permanent exhibitions, in archaeological centres, meetings and through a workshop. The activities will take place in Germany , Spain and the United Kingdom . The exhibition at the Ecomuseum de Cap de Cavalleria was inaugurated in July 2005, and the creation of an interpretation centre (built in the style of a Celtic farm near the Dünsberg site) and the workshop to be held in Edinburgh will take place in April 2006.

The academic workshop in Edinburgh will focus on archaeological praxis and the potential to exchange information between team members with a shared methodology and common interests. Post excavation work performed by Dr. Eberhard Sauer and Dr. Graham Morgan, on the finds and artefacts recovered at the excavations in Alchester military fort will be used as a base for the workshop.

Our goal is the establishment of a permanent link between specialists and the general public, and the opening of real communication channels at a truly European level. Archaeological and historical research is still often dominated by national or regional agendas, and this project attempts to present a wider European perspective. In an almost immediate manner, we will transmit this principle to the public through the permanent exhibitions (in Menorca and Germany ) and the multimedia presentations (to be held at the Dünsberg's interpretation centre). It is worth to mention the fact that a high proportion of the almost 2,000,000 visitors to Menorca come from EU member states, presenting a unique opportunity to confront them with our common European heritage.

Beneficiaries of this project include:

a) Archaeologists and cultural heritage agents.

b) Hundreds of participants that have collaborated in the fieldwork in each of the three sites, many of whom are still actively interested and implicated in the projects.

c) The general public is the main target of the Menorcan exhibition and the interpretation centre at the Dünsberg. The Ecomuseum de Cap de Cavalleria has an average of some 100,000 visitors per year, with a sharp increase as a result of the media and advertising effort associated to the project. Alchester military fort has been featured in many journals and magazines. A Celtic festival ('Keltenfest') in the Dünsberg, held in August 2005 marked the groundbreaking for the construction of the permanent structures as a permanent interpretation centre, and attracted a public in even larger numbers than the 10,000 visitors of the 2002 festival. Some 100,000 people visit the Dünsberg every year, and the yearly excavations enjoy wide public support.
