Archaeological Excavations 1996-1998 in the Roman Military Camp (123 B.C. – 50 B.C.)
We concentrated our archaeological activity in the zone known to our team as the “military camp”, placed on the top of a small hill that controls the entrance to the port of Sanitja, not far from the Roman city of Sanisera.
An extensive excavation was planned in this place to visualize the architectonical plan, the spaces functional use, and the orientation of the military settlement to find out its extension and limits.
It is too early to comment on the results of the 1996 to 1998 digs, as we need to continue the research project with a new planification and the re-start of the excavations to determine more accurately the objectives set.
In the 1996 campaign, between July and October, the southernmost zone of the site was excavated. The extension reached by the excavated surface was 2,180 square metres. The structures and the stratigraphic depth allowed us to uncover a wide area that had some buildings with square rooms.
In the 1997 campaign, from July to October, we decided to excavate the uppermost zone on the hill, which could give us more information on the site’s north limits. We thought the area corresponded to a group of rooms related to the camp’s defensive system. The excavated surface was 760 square metres.
And in the 1998 campaign, we excavated during July and August the lower zone of the site, with very different chronological results to the areas excavated in 1996 and 1997. The abandon period for this zone is Early Empire, and its construction cannot be detailed, as the lowest stratigraphical levels were not excavated, although we assume it was a space of the military camp that continued to be used, and that would be the only place in the camp with a purpose other than military. The excavated zone reached 110 square metres.
