In 2005 the Cap de Cavalleria Ecomusem renovated its showroom with a new exhibition entitled “Discover the North”, a topic which deals with the diffusion of the cultural and natural heritage of the port of Sanitja and the Cavalleria Cape, which was designed by using multimedia resources and without the presence of any original archaeological material. The Ecomuseum’s aim has always been the popularization of both the natural and historic-archaeological values of the North of Menorca.
Previously, from 1997 to 2004, the Ecomuseum had focused its exhibition only on archaeological aspects, since the research carried out by its team of archaeologists obtained interesting results. That project, which was based above all on excavations, revealed a collection of unique objects from the Roman period which were worthy of being exhibited, contemplated and admired. These objects, which were found in a military camp (123 B.C. – 50 B.C.) and the Roman city of Sanisera (1st century B.C. – 6th A.D.), could explain to the visitors how life was during Classical times in the port of Sanitja and, consequently, in the island of Menorca.
After the opening of the most recent exhibition in 2005, the visitors who had had the opportunity of enjoying both of them, and willing to express their most honest opinions, commented on the fact that the display of archaeological material in showcases was also very important in a museum, because even though the new exhibition presented much more information than the previous one, they were missing the archaeological artifacts found during the first years.
After some self-criticism, and always taking into account our visitors’ opinions, in 2009 we decided to endow the exhibition “Discover the North” with all the pieces that had been exhibited in the first years, as well as other objects which were found in recent excavations during the last four years.
From the Ecomuseum we feel proud of the incorporation of these artifacts, and we hope that people who visit Cap de Cavalleria and the northern coast of Menorca will be pleased by looking at them.
We would like to thank the Government of Menorca (Consell Insular de Menorca) for its political will, as well as the treatment received by the Museum of Menorca in order to develop this exhibition. |
