NEWS > NEW EXCAVATION PROJECT IN SANITJA
The association Sa Nitja has re-started the archaeological excavations with a new project directed by the archaeologist Fernando Contreras in Sanitja harbour. The first excavations by the association managing the Ecomuseum de Cap de Cavalleria were in the years 1996 to 1998. After a research period between 1999 and 2003, excavation work begins again and there are digs scheduled for the years 2004 to 2006.
The archaeological intervention will concentrate on the military camp area discovered in 1996. The camp dates back form the time of the Roman conquest of the Balearics by the Roman general Quintus Caecilius Metellus between 123 B.C. and 121 B.C.
Between June and September 2004 some rooms were excavated in the Roman army barracks.
Anybody interested in taking part in the excavation can see the section in the Ecomuseum web site on the ARCHAEOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL. Some places are still available for 2006.
