THE ECOMUSEUM> What can we discover? > Porros island
Jules Verne’s Mistery Island: Porros Island. Porros island is high on its north side and low on the south. A limestone rock not inhabited by man, it is a rich natural landscape with great environmental value. It is very badly eroded, and vegetation cannot survive, although it is occupied by a colony of sea birds, of which the most important species are the Audouin seagull and the Balearic Shearwater, the latter one with the most numerous population in the whole of Spain, between 1,350 and 2,000 reproductive couples. This is an unbeatable place to breed due to its calm and the lack of predators.
Another colony well known to biologists, this time in the reptile world, is the Balearic lizzard, that learnt to adapt to the conditions in such a hard and isolated environment.
Recently, the island was declared a Z.E.P.A. area (bird protection special zone), due to its characteristics and the convenience of this space as a habitat for the migratory and marine birds, as well as its role as an area where endangered birds build their nests.
