THE ECOMUSEUM> What can we discover? > Vegetal community
Juniper thickets . Grows in the sand, in the dunes or very near the coast. The junipers are accompanied by shrubs, Ierian gypsum, and various species of creepers. A unique bosque is found near Forn de Calç, on the north side of the Santa Teresa grounds.
Wild olive groves . In shallow soil near the sea there is a lowland grove where wild olives, shrubs, buckthorns, and fan palms (in smaller numbers) grow together. Climbing plants like the fern-leafed clematis, Clematis flammula (commonly known as the fragrant virgin's bower), the sarsaparilla or the asparagus fern can also be found. A good example can be found at Sanitja harbour, very near the remains ?of the Roman military camp.
Pine groves . Being a highly adaptable species, the pine has flourished on the island, often accompanied by Arbutus unedo (common name: strawberry tree). A large expanse can be found on the rise that takes you to the Cap de Cavalleria lighthouse northeast of Sanitja harbour.
Reed beds . Very few plant species live where the sea meets the land. The most common is the reed, together with the samphire, devil's thorn and several varieties of Statice limonium.
There are also Launaea cervicornis, chamomiles and Artemisia gallica, among others. These can be contemplated a few metres from Cap de Cavalleria.
Torrents and salt marshes . A torrent with a very low water level (dry in summer) flows into the Sanitja harbour. Here one can observe an area with tamarix or saltcedars, rushes, and closer to the sea, golden samphires and other salt-storing plants.
Sand and dunes . The vegetal species at Cavalleria and Cala Viola beaches are varied and depend on the degree of salinity of the sand. The golden samphire is the predominant species, and is accompanied by rushes and reeds, the common samphire, Statice limonium, and Artemisia gallica. If the sand is not very salty, one can also find the Stachys ocymastrum and the sand iris, with its bright white flowers, as well as some euphorbias and field eryngos. In the watercourses, where the soil remains damp for long stretches of time, one may find communities of chastetrees, which are strikingly beautiful shrubs, as well as saltcedars and rushes.
The dune vegetation is spectacular: the predominant species are the European beachgrass, the gram prim or scutchgrass, and other tall grasses. There are a couple of species that are endemic to the fixed dunes: one from the eastern Balearic Islands , the Thymelaea velutina, and Scrophularia canina, which is exclusive to Minorca .
